Jim Jordan, stymied a third time by fellow Republicans, dropped his bid for speaker Friday afternoon, ensuring the paralysis in the House stretches to three weeks.
“I supported Jim Jordan wholeheartedly and it was a mistake for the Republican conference to just walk away from arguably the most popular Republican in the Republican Party,” said Rep. Chip Roy of Austin. “Now we’ve got to go back and figure out what we’re doing.”Jordan, chair of the Judiciary Committee, had issued a last-minute plea to holdouts so the House can reopen and speed aid to Israel. It didn’t work.

Self emerged grim from the afternoon meeting at which Jordan was ousted, and wouldn’t say who he’ll support next.He topped Jordan 210-199 on Friday, with two Democrats absent including a Texan. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez of McAllen had a death in the family, aides said.
“Our plan this weekend is to get a speaker elected to the House of Representatives as soon as possible so we can help the American people,” Jordan said Friday morning. “We’ve got important work to do. We need to help Israel. We need to get the appropriations process moving so that the key elements of our government are funded and funded in the right way, particularly our military.
