Houston Buddhist temple celebrates Ông Bổn Festival with lion dances to give thanks for the past year
People come together to celebrate the Ong Bon Festival and Eye Dot ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023 at Texas Teo Chew Temple in Houston.Members of the Teo Chew Temple in Asiatown gave thanks for the new year with incense, roast pork and five new lions during a community celebration Sunday.
The festival this year included an additional layer of celebration as the group welcomed five new fabric lions, each donated by a local business. Before beginning their dance, the five lions — each operated by a pair of performers — laid low on the ground to participate in an eye dot ceremony to symbolically bring them to life. Their mouths, ears, noses and other body parts were each dotted to bring life to each one.
Performers, some as young as 6, danced through the crowd, leaping on each others' shoulders to rear back the lions' heads or crouching low to the ground to offer open mouths to small children holding out donations for the temple. Offerings of lettuce and oranges were placed on the ground for the colorful lions, who made a show of eating the lettuce and tossing the scraps into the air toward the crowd.
The sounds of each battle were enhanced by the ongoing music, played loudly to scare away evil spirits. A total of 20 performers, training from anywhere between one and 12 years, took part in the celebration as dozens watched, Vuong said.
