A teenage girl was injured by a stray bullet Tuesday as she was walking within a block of the Vallejo High School, Vallejo City Unified School District officialsThe preliminary investigation indicated that the teen was not a target and she was likely caught in crossfire, Sgt. Rashad Hollis, spokesperson for the Vallejo Police Department, told SFGATE on the phone.
The incident was reported at about 3:30 p.m. on Nebraska Street, Hollis said. Officers responded to the scene and found the teen had been shot at least once and had a non-life-threatening injury, according to police. She was taken to a local hospital.Vallejo High School held classes Wednesday with increased security, William Spalding, superintendent of the Vallejo City Unified School District, wrote in a statement.
"If your student sees something suspicious, please remind them to say something to any school staff member," Spalding said."Also, please talk with your child. Anything that our students might be aware of where there are problems or dangerous activities in our community we need to know about and act on."
