CLEVELAND, Ohio — A previously experimental therapy to restore blood flow in the limbs of diabetic patients received FDA approval last week, giving thousands of diabetics with severe vascular disease an alternative to amputation.LimFlow therapyWithout intervention, the loss of blood flow to the foot and leg results in poor wound healing, infection, and tissue death. Previously the only effective treatment was amputation.
However, the new procedure essentially turns a healthy vein, which returns blood to the heart, into an artery, which carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart throughout the body. This change creates a new pathway for blood to flow back into the foot. Last March, the researchers published the results of a large clinical trial showing that the therapy improved wound healing and allowed most patients to keep their leg.An estimated 2 million Americans are at risk for amputation due to lack of blood flow to a limb, and the Amputee Coalition of America estimates more than 500 patients undergo an amputation every day, primarily due to vascular disease.Amputees can have debilitating “phantom pain” in the missing limb.
