To win PR points, Western tech companies are indiscriminately endangering people's health and livelihoods.
I don’t doubt that tech giants want to do the right thing. I don’t doubt that they tried to stand with Ukraine in its hour of need. But what is increasingly clear is that these companies are simply incapable of wielding the power they now hold on the global stage. We often hear how large tech firms are more like countries than companies. While that may be true when it comes to the scope of their influence, it rarely represents the reality of how they wield that influence.
Instead of legitimizing even more corporate dysfunction on the world stage, companies must defer to the elected leaders of global governments. Rather than trying to front-run sanctions for PR points, tech companies should follow the governmental guidance on the ground. And firms like Intuit should try to remedy the harm they’ve already caused by allowing users to extract their data.
A debate over corporate governance may feel academic in the midst of human rights catastrophes, but the consequences are all too real for Kitaina’s patients. “When the data was blocked I feared that we will lose contact with some of the clients and … that they would think that we abandoned them,” she says. For Kitaina, the account closures and financial restrictions “created a feeling that we are pariahs.
