Sources in the Texas House and Texas Senate confirmed TEA Commissioner Mike Morath will sit down with Democrats and Republicans in Austin, fulfilling a commitment from that agency to brief lawmakers before making any formal announcement.
Since the start of March, Houston officials have been bracing for an HISD takeover announcement. That’s when Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner warned that after years of legal and legislative delays, TEA was planning to announce a decision soon. “I’m talking to legislators, and what they’re saying to me is that the state intends to takeover the district, replacing the entire board, replacing the superintendent," Turner said. With an HISD state takeover looming, here's how the TEA has taken over other Texas school districts
Even before Wednesday’s meeting, state lawmakers from Houston were trying to push back at the TEA takeover plan. State Sen. Borris Miles, D-Houston, said HISD has made big improvements over the years that state officials are ignoring. The district got a"B" rating last year from the state education agency.
“The grades have improved,” he said. “The situation has improved. The board has improved. The superintendent is doing a fantastic job. I don’t think TEA has the legal or moral right to take it over right now.”
