A report last week indicated athletic director Chris Del Conte planned to hire Sonny Dykes...
AUSTIN — Out on the field Saturday night, Texas still had a chance, but it was dwindling by the second. Near the corner of the Royal-Memorial Stadium end zone, two fans with sideline passes needed hope.Eight rows above them, a tall, bushy-haired kid in khakis and a gray hoodie stood amid the box seats, glancing at his cell phone.
That’s easier, on a night such as Saturday, than looking across the field and seeing what might have been. At UT, see, winning the news conference is priority one. The Longhorns always are selling, and nothing sells quite like the next big thing. Look, for example, at the top of the national rankings. Four of the top seven teams in the latest Associated Press Top 25 are TCU, Tennessee, LSU and USC. All are in the first or second season with their current head coach. And each of those four coaches took over a team that finished with a losing record the year before he arrived.
But nobody expected them to be here, in mid-November, controlling their own national-championship destiny. Nobody expected this from Dykes, who as a kid stood in the locker room at UT with his dad Spike, then a Longhorns assistant, as Darrell Royal told the team he was stepping down.
