Exclusive: Special Ops: Lioness director Paul Cameron reveals the unique work environment created by Taylor Sheridan’s remote show-running.
Taylor Sheridan, co-creator of the ever-expanding Yellowstone cinematic universe, has set his sights on the global war on terror with Special Ops: Lioness. The show, based on a real-life CIA program, tells the story of a female Marine tasked with befriending the daughter of a suspected terrorist. The series’ cast is outstanding, led by Zoe Saldana, Nicole Kidman, and Morgan Freeman; Saldana and Kidman also serve as executive producers.
Paul Cameron: In this case, we had two scripts when we arrived, and [neither] Taylor nor anyone from his camp directly related was showrunning it. There were some people from his camp, but an actual showrunner per se wasn't present, so it was a lot of conversations with both Taylor and Michael Friedman, who works side-by-side with Taylor on the production side of things. It’s basically long-distance showrunners.
Paul Cameron: The challenge is [that] you've got high-end talent like Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, Zoe Saldana, Michael Kelly, Bruce McGill, [and] Jennifer Ehle. These are all high-end actors [and] once they're doing a scene and they start to do a line, they may have a question about the line or want to alter a line.
