This may not surprise those of you who know me, but I’m one of those people who enjoys short, impromptu conversations with people I don’t know.
I especially like to chat when I’m killing time, like standing in a line. I also enjoy saying hello to fellow walkers my wife and I pass on our beach strolls.
With all the discussion of mental health challenges that so many people are facing, it got me thinking about these “mini-chats,” as I call them. Because human beings are social creatures by nature, these simple interactions can reduce the feeling of isolation for others, even for myself. Now think about those among us, especially younger people who work alone in their studio apartment with minimal human interaction. Their workday blends into their personal time.Now, many don’t have this outlet that allows them to meet up with friends. They stay on their computer day after day, without talking to anyone else who’s not online.In my field, a big part of the job interview is getting to know the candidate.
Awkward for all. But can a candidate, nervous themselves, put the interviewer at ease? If so, their odds of getting the job offer will shoot up.I think these little chats are great training for being more comfortable talking with people we don’t already know.
