PESHAWAR, Pakistan/KABUL - The Afghan Taliban released American and Australian university professors held hostage for more than three years on Tuesday, Afghan, U.S. and Australian officials said, completing a delayed prisoner swap and raising hopes for a revival of peace talks.

Talks between the Taliban and the United States aimed at ending their 18-year war collapsed in September after President Donald Trump called off what he described as a planned meeting at the U.S. Camp David presidential retreat. “The Taliban have indicated that the release of the two professors is intended as a goodwill gesture, which the United States welcomes,” U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a written statement, saying the men were in the care of the U.S. military.Pompeo also said he welcomed the Afghan government’s release of the three Taliban prisoners and the “Taliban’s impending release of 10 Afghan prisoners” but provided no details on this.

In a statement with his foreign minister, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison described the release “as one of a series of confidence-building measures” that “we hope ... will set the stage for a ceasefire and intra-Afghan dialogue.”
