Taliban suicide car bomber targets police headquarters in minority Shiite part of Kabul; dozens hurt.
Afghan security forces stand guard near the site of a deadly explosion in Kabul, Afghanistan, Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019.A magnetic bomb was placed on a van carrying employees of the Interior Ministry's counter-narcotics division. The blast killed five people and wounded another seven, Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said.
There was no immediate confirmation of any deaths in the attack, the second in the Afghan capital in as many days. Local media showed a large plume of smoke rising above that part of Kabul, which is home to many of the minority Hazara community. The facade of one multi-story building had been ripped away. Shopkeepers were sweeping up broken glass.
Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah condemned the attack, saying in a Twitter post that “the terrorists aim to disrupt the presidential election campaign.” The Islamic State group’s affiliate in Afghanistan, which has also been behind several large-scale attacks in Kabul, frequently targets minority Shiites.
But the Taliban have continued to sideline the Kabul government, dismissing it as a U.S. puppet and refusing to negotiate with it.
