San Mateo County nets 400 pounds of fireworks in first-ever “buy back” program
As we approach the cacophonous Fourth of July holiday, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office coaxed residents to turn over nearly 400 pounds of fireworks in the county’s first “buy back” program.
At the Sunday event, modeled after the popular gun buyback programs, community members earned up to $75 in cash, based on weight, by turning in their fireworks. Fireworks are prohibited in all Bay Area counties, with some exceptions in some cities for the “safe and sane” varieties, which are neither projectile nor explosive. “Safe and sane” fireworks include fountains, sparklers, smokeballs, snake-type fireworks, ground-spinning fireworks, pinwheels, most novelty fireworks, toytrick noisemakers, and some crackling items.
