Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te starts a week-long visit in the Pacific, calling for international cooperation to prevent war. The tour has sparked anger in Beijing and highlights the growing tension between Taiwan and China.
This handout taken and released by Taiwan's Presidential Office on November 30, 2024 shows Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te posing with the Bishop Museum Director Dee Jay Mailer in Honolulu, Hawaii. President Lai arrived in the United States for the start of a week-long tour in the Pacific that he said would usher in a new era of democracy, but has sparked fury in Beijing.
He said the US flag and Hawaii state flag given to him as a gift “symbolise the longstanding friendship between Taiwan and the United States and lays the foundation for further cooperation in the future.” Beijing opposes any international recognition of Taiwan and its claim to be a sovereign state and especially bristles at official contact between the island and the United States.
Looking relaxed in a Hawaiian shirt, Lai flitted around, visiting a Pacific island history museum, an emergency management centre and the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor.
