Residents, property owners, and businesses in the Manitou Area are now required to follow Tacoma's laws after the area was annexed by the city. The annexation, which took effect on April 1, 2024, means that businesses in the Manitou Area will now be subject to licensing, taxes, fees, and regulations set by the City of Tacoma. While business license fees are expected to increase, smaller businesses will be protected by tiered rates. Additionally, Manitou Area businesses will be exempt from Tacoma's business and occupation tax until the fourth year of the annexation.

As one of the unincorporated “islands” in Pierce County, annexing the Manitou Area to the City of Tacoma was part of the On December 12, 2023, the Tacoma City Council set an annexation effective date of April 1, 2024.
