How to Manage a Panic Attack at WorkPanic disorder is a form of anxiety in which recurrent, unexpected panic attacks (along with fear of having additional attacks) can happen. Panic attacks can appear out of the blue and some may be triggered by particular situations. Panic attacks are caused by your sympathetic nervous system being stimulated. We process fearful and threatening stimuli in our amygdala. When emotions of fear and threat arise, your brain springs into action, making you believe you’re in mortal danger. The physical symptoms and cognitive symptoms include rapid and concurrent onset of a number of characteristic symptoms, which may include, but are not limited to, palpitations or increased heart rate, sweating, trembling, sensations of shortness of breath, feelings of choking, chest pain, nausea or abdominal distress, feelings of dizziness or light headedness. It is possible to start to feel a panic attack coming on. The kinds of symptoms can be different for each person, but they usually include a combination of the symptoms described above. But it’s also important to ensure that those symptoms aren’t due to another medical condition (an adrenaline-producing tumor) or the direct effects of a substance or medication on the central nervous system (e.g., coffee, cocaine), including withdrawal effects (e.g., alcohol, benzodiazepines). An underlying depression may also lead to anxiety symptoms and panic attacks. One way to manage a panic attack in the moment is to practice “square breathing.” This involves imagining your breathing as a square — breathe in for four seconds, hold your breath for four, then out for four and hold for four again. You can continue to do this until you’re feeling calmer. As you intentionally slow down and control your breathing, your heart rate will come down, the tingling sensations which come with overbreathing settle, and gradually, the panic attack subsides.
