Suspended Manville police Chief Thomas Herbst flashed a badge during a traffic stop earlier this year, according to an indictment
Thomas Herbst, 55, of Bridgewater, was indicted on two counts of sexual assault, four counts of official misconduct and one count apiece of a pattern of official misconduct and criminal sexual contact, according to the state Office of the Attorney General.
One of the charges is new as Herbst allegedly displayed a police badge when he was pulled over by an officer on Jan. 30. Herbst was supposed to have turned the badge in when he was suspended last year, the office of the Attorney General said. Some of the accusations against Herbst came to light in a lawsuit filed by a veteran department employee,in February 2022, claiming Herbst repeatedly sexually assaulted her at work and at her home in a “prolonged pattern and practice of abhorrent sexual harassment” that continued for 13 years.
The woman said she was a single mother and didn’t speak up because she feared losing her job and not being believed if she had reported the misconduct. Herbst is also accused of sexually harassing a male subordinate and his wife, in one case texting the officer “demanding oral sex from the employee’s wife in exchange for a promotion,” authorities said.
