Phillip Ellis pulls a fast one on the big boys on his way to the Rolex 24 at Daytona pole.
Philip Ellis' Winward Racing Mercedes AMG GT3 was the fastest car in GTD class in qualifying for the Rolex 24 at Daytona.GTD Pro pole winner Moro Engel and WeatherTech Racing's Mercedes-AMG GT3 ended up fourth behind three GTD drivers on the Rolex 24 grid.
The Mercedes-AMGs of Sun 1 Racing and Team Korthoff took second and third on the GTD grid and also finished qualifying ahead of the nine cars in the GTD Pro field. “Of course, it’s nice to be at the very top of the GT field, but it doesn’t really mean much,” said Ellis. “The cars are the same; we have the same BoP , so it’s not like it used to be with the old GTLM . So this is the icing on the cake, but it doesn’t mean anything for the racing, unfortunately. It’s a completely different animal to go through the 24 hours.”
“It doesn’t matter much for us,” said Engel of trailing the GTD cars, because his class pole is worth 35 championship points.
