Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal estimated that 1.5 million new jobless claims were filed last week. The U.S. Labor Department will release a national compilation of claims on Thursday. The highest number of new claims on record is 695,000 filed in the week ended Oct. 2, 1982. “This system was not built for a crisis,” said Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted at a press conference. “It was built to take care of what we could expect on a regular or even robust basis. But what we’re experiencing now is frankly unprecedented.”
On Monday, he waited on hold for two hours trying to reach someone at the Department of Employment Services, but no one answered.Mr. Samli said his wife is still employed so he will be able to keep up with rent. Still, he is cutting out all unnecessary shopping, has let the nanny for his 4-year-old son go and is considering selling his car because he is unsure how he can keep up with the payments.
