Stuart Anderson:Local police officers in Kansas stopped three individuals, at different times, for ordinary traffic offenses. The officers came to suspect that the individuals lacked lawful immigration status. Officers began to investigate their immigration and employment status.

The Kansas State Supreme Court – in agreement with the Iowa Supreme Court – held that this sort of criminal prosecution is barred by federal law.
