Scientists were eager to understand the performance of gallium nitride, touted as the successor to silicon, under high-temperature conditions.
Silicon made chips have an upper temperature limit but gallium nitride chips works at extreme temperatures too.Gallium nitride is touted as the next-generation semiconductor that could one day replace silicon, but research on the material is still in its infancy.

Venus, for instance, boasts temperatures so extreme that it can melt lead in a jiffy, and our spacecraft won’t even last a moment there. “We first wanted to make sure the material and contacts could survive, and figure out how much they change as you increase the temperature,” Nirula explained in aTo study the impact of temperature on ohmic contacts, the researchers placed the contacts in temperatures of 932 Fahrenheit for 48 hours straight.
To better understand contact resistance in gallium nitride devices, the researchers at MIT built transfer length method structures, which consist of a series of resistors and enable measurement of contact and material resistance. In collaboration with Rice University, the researchers placed these structures on hot chucks that reached 932 Fahrenheit and measured their resistance.
