Following Artistic Director David Niwa's passing on Sept. 1, Sunday at Central has named Jeffrey Myers, an Upper Arlington native, as successor

David NiwaNiwa, who died Sept. 1, at the age of 58, was a constant presence on the classical music scene here: In his capacity as assistant concertmaster of the Columbus Symphony, Niwa was a fixture on the stage of the Ohio Theatre; as the artistic director of the long-running, nonprofit concert series“That was his baby,” said Niwa’s wife, pianistKaneda said that Niwa succumbed to complications from a rare form of appendix cancer that he had been diagnosed with in 2007.

This summer, when his condition worsened, Niwa formally invited Myers to take over the series; Myers was in Columbus to participate in the“When got very sick, about three or four weeks ago, Jeff just happened to be back in Columbus,” Kaneda said. “They actually had a really serious chat in the hospital.”

Myers, who will still maintain his home in New York, jumped at the chance to cement his ties to Columbus.As a youth, Myers attended numerous Sunday at Central concerts, which for many years, took place at the now-closed Central Presbyterian Church. The concerts often attracted members of the Columbus Symphony who were eager to perform chamber-music repertoire in intimate settings, including series founder, symphony violist Ken Matsuda.

Niwa was born in Chicago and educated at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Juilliard School in New York City, but he had other passions besides the violin.
