Summer unofficially starts in two weeks, but cold and snow are visiting New England
High-altitude weather pattern shows big dip in the stream over the Northeast with a pool of cold air lodged over the region. By Jason Samenow Jason Samenow Editor and writer covering weather and climate Email Bio Follow May 14 at 4:20 PM It’s mid-May, less than two weeks from Memorial Day, but New England looks and feels like mid-March as an unusually cold spring storm lifts through the region.
Up to 3 to 6 inches of snow fell near the summit of mountain areas, with amounts of 1 to 3 inches more common down to an elevation of around 1,000 to 1,500 feet. Sleet pellets and snowflakes were seen as far south as western Connecticut. Here are snow totals from Vermont and New Hampshire reported to the National Weather Service:
Closer to sea level, it’s been raw, windy and wet. Temperatures in Boston; Portland, Maine; and Providence, R.I., hovered in the 40s Tuesday afternoon. For cold-weather-weary New Englanders, the good news is that this cold pool will disperse and highs are forecast to soar into the 70s by the weekend. Here is the view at the base of Whiteface courtesy of the NYS Mesonet.
