For Valentine’s Day and beyond, Sugoi Sweets wows with a rainbow of colorful chocolates.
A variety of chocolate bonbons from Sugoi Sweets in Naperville on Friday, Jan. 28, 2022. Some examples of flavors include: raspberry rose, matcha, yuzu, coconut almond, mango and passion almond. Each bonbon is handmade and painted by chef Elle Lei.
Lei’s eye-catching bonbons in unique and varied flavors take a leap beyond everyday Instagrammable eye candy and deliver subtle, pleasing flavor bombs packed inside impossibly thin chocolate shells.
Packages of elegantly slender hand-cut caramel sticks wrapped in cellophane are intensely flavored with yuzu, blackberry or espresso. The natural coloring is derived from real fruit and visually inspired by boxes of colored pencils spied at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art gift shop. All this technique-heavy production comes from Lei’s hands-on kitchen experience. She earned a law degree in China, but caught the restaurant bug working the garde-manger station at a restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky, learning French technique and working with high-end ingredients. “I really love desserts,” Lei said. “My favorite part of the whole job is scooping ice cream and plating desserts.”
