is back, and have we ever needed it more? August is never the best of months for entertainment, and unless you’re still arguing over, this month has been a pop-cultural desert. But now, here comes the Roy family with their faltering media empire, their ambition and venality, their thirst for power, their tragic failings. What an hour of television! Last night’s second-season debut on HBO was riveting, somehow exceeding the sky-high expectations that have attached to this show.
Kendall, with his addictions and humiliation, wants to stay away from his family—but his father has other ideas. Logan needs him to go on live television and make a statement to prop up the Waystar stock price. Duty done, Kendall is then drawn back into the bosom of the family, a silent simmering presence as his siblings circle around with their knives out.
The fact that Armstrong can maintain the tension around that question is remarkable. In some senses nothing has changed from Season 1: Roman is still a wisecracking clown, Connor a spooky lunatic , Shiv a gorgeous bundle of ambition and need. Shiv, one senses, is going to be a tragic heroine this season, burdened with false hope from her father that she is the chosen one.
