New research reveals that our gut bacteria may be dismantling the pills we take
It seems so easy. You get a prescription filled, follow the directions on the bottle, and then just wait for the results. But as with many things we assumed before learning more about the bacterial universe in our guts, the story isn’t nearly so simple.on the microbiome has found that many species of bacteria living in our guts digest and metabolize a high percentage of the popular drugs we take.
As a follow-up, researchers tested some of the drugs in mice to evaluate how their gut bacteria responded . The results largely lined up with the lab tests, with many of the same enzymes involved.This was mainly a lab study, limited by seeing effects in culture tests and mice, but it’s a big step toward understanding dynamics only glimpsed in smaller studies so far.
Second, they enlighten potentially dangerous long-term side effects of bacteria breaking down drugs and leaving toxic pieces behind. This should be an important consideration for drug manufacturers. “It is possible that we can use genes or species of bacteria to predict the capacity of an individual’s gut flora to metabolize a certain drug,” said Maria Zimmermann-Kogadeeva, co-lead author of the study. “The work is a first step in identifying biomarkers that could help doctors prescribe the drugs that are the safest and most effective for individual patients.”
