'With nine schools competing, the theater is a sea of color, students and supporters alike, sporting apparel in their respective team’s hue.'

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Almira Elementary School students stand in the lobby of Playhouse Square’s State Theater, looking up in awe. Most have never been in such a space, the high ceilings and massive art pieces on the walls mesmerize them, as they wait for the final Dancing Classrooms competition to begin.

“When we found out we made it, my heart went 10 times bigger than the actual heart size,” Ally says. “This week felt like the longest week ever.” The judges will calculate their scores using the same rubric as they did in the semi-finals, factoring in skill, partnership, performance and attendance. But unlike Monday, when Almira competed at an attendance disadvantage, with only 11 of 12 team members present, tonight they’re dancing with a full roster.

After they complete all five rounds of assigned dances, the event moves into phase two, when they’ll have to dance one of the other four competition routines. On stage, the sound level is dramatically different. The students stand quietly in rows. Their whispers are barely audible, as they give each other final words of encouragement.

With only one team color not yet named, the blue team realizes that they’ve earned the top score, and they begin to celebrate, while Ms. Carcioppolo makes the official announcement.
