The Department of Education on Tuesday extended a pause on student loan repayments through June as officials ask the Supreme Court to determine whether the department has the authority to carry out President Joe Biden’s announced student debt relief program.

Officials said payments will resume 60 days after litigation over the program is resolved.

“If the program has not been implemented and the litigation has not been resolved by June 30, 2023 — payments will resume 60 days after that,” Department of Education officials said in a news release. Last week, the Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to decide whether officials have the authority to cancel student debt for millions of Americans. Under Biden’s student debt relief program, Pell Grant recipients would get as much as $20,000 in student loan debt relief while federal student borrowers would get as much as $10,000 in debt relief. Americans who make less than $125,000 would be eligible for the relief.

Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson — one of several attorneys general challenging the debt relief program — last week said the program “threatens serious harm to the economy that cannot be undone.”
