In the wake of a strip-mall burglary that decimated multiple businesses in an East Oakland neighborhood, city officials said they were working to coordinate investigative and supportive efforts.
At a press conference Monday, Oakland police Chief LeRonne Armstrong said the break-in happened around 4 a.m. at the strip mall in the 800 block of International Boulevard, but added that police did not receive reports of the incident until 6 a.m.
“If we would have gotten the call at [4 a.m.], it would have gave us a greater chance to actually apprehend those individuals. Obviously it takes a lot of time to burglarize seven businesses.” In a statement Tuesday, Councilmember and City Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas said she was “heartbroken” by the “absolutely unacceptable and devastating” break-in and robbery.
