Hunger - Of late, we’ve been inundated with films that satirize the rich and entitled - think Triangle of Sadness, Parasite, and the series White Lotus. And last year, this satirizing was given a culinary twist when The Menu hit our theaters. So Hunger would seem to want to forge the same path as The Menu, taking on class divides, and how access to the most expensive culinary experiences become status symbols for the very rich.
I say convoluted because there’s this tension between the story of Aoy , a street food chef who desires more and applies to Hunger; and the other theme of poking fun at the very rich. While Chef Paul , is a central character, the revelation that he also came from a poor background, should have placed him and Aoy as allies. But as the story further develops, the two become rivals in a manner that strips the story of any real chance of redemption.
Directed by JD Chua, film star Liu is a popular leading actress in Malaysia. Pains are taken to establish this isn’t Singapore but a generic Southeast Asian city. I understand that principal cinematography was done pre-pandemic, and the health crisis allowed the filmmakers to edit the film - now down to some 80 minutes. That it’s trimmed down all the way to 80 minutes had me worried. The effort is there to make this fast-paced and exciting.
