Comedian Nathan Fielder's 'The Rehearsal' is strangely, somehow the most moving show on TV
, where he primarily helps small business owners by suggesting head-spinningly absurd improvements, he blurs lines by appearing at least as aof himself. Emotionally intelligent but socially awkward, he explains in a voiceover: “I am not good at meeting people for the first time. I’ve been told my personality can make people uncomfortable… Humor is my go-to instinct, but every joke is a gamble.
Fantasies are made inhabitable, injected with as much realism as possible in the hopes of storyboarding a life without failure. Part of the shock, as ever with Fielder, is that these quiet musings are made deafeningly loud. As the show unfolds, he burns bridges by admitting, “I wanted to make you feel X, so I did Y.” In the process, he lays bare the desires and processes that have made books likeThis has always been Fielder’s way. In one episode of’s show.
, tells a story that involves the same highlights. It suggests, on some level, that she has gone through a parallel process. And that’s the thing about, too. Although it’s probably the strangest show on TV right now, the only truly strange part is the scale of Fielder’s experiments, not the fundamentally human impulses behind them.
