“I also want to acknowledge that the policies that the Government of Canada and the colonization we have inflicted on Indigenous peoples across this country have directly led to the overincarceration. Indigenous women, right now, are the fastest growing prison population in Canada,” she added.Drew Wilby, assistant deputy minister of community engagement with Integrated Justice Services, said the province looked at the inmate population and saw the number of incarcerated women was spiking.
He said women who reoffend often do so because of a lack of support. This, he said, will provide that support in the community.
