The State Fair calls them the Big Tex Choice Awards finalists. We call them the kings and queens of concessions.For the 24-day run of the State Fair of Texas from Sept. 27, 2024, to Oct. 20, 2024, these 10 concessions items could draw the attention of the 2 million or more carnival-goers visiting one of the largest fairs in the United States.“One of the top reasons people come to the fair is the food — we are known for our food,” said State Fair spokeswoman Karissa Condoianis.
Isaac Rousso, one of the winningest State Fair concessionaires, is back this year. His Cotton Candy Bacon on a Stick is just that: A tall slab of bacon, glazed with cotton candy sugar, served on a stick.In 2024, they’re back with a sweet dish, a nutty bar jazzed up with toasted marshmallows, two Oreos, strawberry sauce and freeze-dried strawberry pieces. Of course, it comes on a stick.
Not even Oprah Winfrey could visit the State Fair of Texas without eating a corny dog. In 2009, she sampled Deep Fried Butter and Deep Fried Peaches & Cream. The inaugural winners in 2005 were inventive but not unimaginable. A fried peanut butter, jelly and banana sandwich won “best taste.” By 2006, concessionaires cranked up the crazy. Over the next five years, we were treated to fried Coke, a deep-fried latte, chicken-fried bacon, deep-fried butter and fried beer., many of us wondered? The Big Tex Choice Awards had turned into an edible science experiment, not just a food competition.
