Stars must take advantage of condensed schedule to make up ground in playoff hunt | MDeFranks
Dallas Stars left wing Jamie Benn looks up at the scoreboard during a timeout in the third period of an NHL hockey game against the Washington Capitals at the American Airlines Center on Friday, Jan. 28, 2022, in Dallas.FFRISCO — When the Stars resume their schedule Wednesday night against the Predators, it will kick off a sprint to the finish of the regular season, as Dallas will play its final 39 games in 80 days.
The condensed schedule is this way, in part, because of the league-wide coronavirus outbreak in December because of the omicron variant. The Stars had six games postponed in December and January, and all were rescheduled during what was supposed to be the NHL’s Olympic break. “Anything is better than last year,” Stars coach Rick Bowness said. “I’ve never been through that, and like I said last year, I don’t ever want to go through that again.”
The Stars emerge from the break a healthy bunch, as they welcomed goaltender Braden Holtby, and forwards Michael Raffl and Joel Kiviranta back to practice Tuesday night. Holtby and Kiviranta missed the last game before the break with lower-body injuries. Raffl has not played since Jan. 21 after blocking a shot with his foot.
