In the end, there's no reason to turn him down, since siding with him doesn't lock them into betraying Delgado, and can even unlock some major benefits down the line. He's not exactly a decent person, but he is capable and to some extent earnest. Going against Mathis only serves to upset him, and while refusing to go along with his plan doesn't permanently turn him against the player character, continuing to side against him can invoke his wrath.
Cons Of Siding With Mathis In Starfield Staying in Mathis' good graces in the long term means that the player character will eventually have to take the Crimson Fleet's side in their conflict against the United Colonies. Again, while many join the Crimson Fleet of their own accord, many others do so as part of the infiltration mission assigned by UC, which, after Constellation, is the first faction most people join in Starfield.
At the end of the Crimson Fleet storyline, the player character will finally find Kryx's Legacy. They can choose which side to take by deciding who to give it to: Commander Ikande of UC's SysDef, or Delgado. Whichever side doesn't get the Legacy will mount an attack on the other side's base, and the player character will have to help the defense effort.
