Before filmmaker George Lucas could bring to life a galaxy far, far away, he had to assemble an industry-changing special effects house to do it. And now, fans are seeing how thanks to Mobile filmmaker Gideon Carson Kennedy.
A long time ago, as upstart filmmaker George Lucas sought to bring to life a galaxy far, far away, he had to assemble an industry-changing special effects house to do it. “Light & Magic,” a new Disney Plus documentary series, delves into that story with unprecedented detail and footage that even serious “Star Wars” fans have never seen before.
It’s a sentiment Kennedy recalled recently as he and Remsberg came together on a Zoom call to talk about the project and their involvement. A large-scale model of the Millennium Falcon is shown in a behind-the-scenes image from "Light & Magic."“About half of it is archival material that came from Lucasfilm and the other half had to be found,” he said. “That’s one reason that they brought us in, to find that other half, that’s a big part of it. And then there’s managing it all, clearing the rights.
“It’s a funny mix of systematic and random,” said Remsberg. “We have a database of archives we’ve built over the years.” “I don’t really get it,” Remsberg said of the “Star Wars” mystique. “I’m the half of the team that comes to this project without the passion for the subject – which I think is often healthy.”
“Learning much more about the personalities and the talents of the individuals involved and the human story behind all of it is really what drives it,” said Kennedy.
