Recent additions to the established canon help explain why various lightsaber forms were developed for both Jedi and Sith in the Star Wars galaxy.

New additions to the Star Wars continuity have helped explain how and why lightsaber forms were developed in the galaxy far, far away. As confirmed in both the official canon and in the past non-canon material known as Legends, there are many different ways in which a lightsaber can be wielded.

For example, elements of the Makashi lightsaber form were adjusted to work in tandem with crossguard lightsabers. Relying on controlled and precise strikes, Count Dooku was well practiced in the Makashi form both as a Jedi and a Sith Lord after his corruption to the dark side, teaching the same form to his apprentice Asajj Ventress. It also had a flair with its parries and counterstrikes that were as elegant as the weapon itself.

Additionally, the Niman form was best used by Jedi or Sith who wielded double-bladed lightsabers as well as those who sought to implement the powers of the Force to a greater degree. There were Jedi who had less of a desire to engage in genuine lightsaber combat for various reasons, so Niman created openings in which the Force could be relied on as a primary defense instead.
