Star Wars can’t seem to decide whether Jedi in the original trilogy should be weak, like Luke Skywalker, or strong, like Cal Kestis and Ezra Bridger.
George Lucas chose to film and release the Star Wars franchise in a strange way, and that created a big problem for the Jedi in each trilogy. By starting with the original trilogy in 1977, Lucas first introduced the concept of the mystical power of the Force to audiences. While Luke Skywalker doesn’t utilize his powers much in A New Hope, he begins to train and hone his skill in The Empire Strikes Back. By the time of Return of the Jedi, Luke is considered a Jedi Knight.
Of course, Luke undergoes a big jump in power between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. As a Jedi Knight, Luke begins to look a little more similar to Knights from the prequel era. He’s attuned to his Force senses enough to realize the familial connection between him and Leia, and he is able to sense Vader when passing by his ship on his way to Endor.
Star Wars Has Explained Why Jedi Were Less Powerful During The OT How powerful one is in the Force has to do with which side the user is tapping into, because many Force powers in Star Wars are inherently tied to the dark side or the light. When the dark side is currently reigning and dominant in the galaxy, any dark side users experience a sort of power boost to their abilities. Similarly, when the dark side reigns, many light side users are nerfed below their usual power level.
This explanation also helps show why Luke is so much more powerful in the sequels than in the original trilogy. After Palpatine was defeated in Return of the Jedi, Luke’s power increased to the point where he was able to single-handedly decimate Moff Gideon’s army of dark troopers in The Mandalorian season 2. It also explains why Luke was able to cast a Force projection of himself in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, despite being worlds away.
