In the new episode 'Broken Pieces,' Star Trek: Picard' reveals the backstory of the Romulan Zhat Vash and who's really to blame for the attack on the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars.
,"Broken Pieces," finally reveals why the Zhat Vash—a secret faction within the Romulan intelligence agency, the Tal Shiar—are so determined to kill Data's"daughter," Soji Asha . Though Soji still lives, their mission so far has been a remarkable success. Not only did they successfully eliminate Soji's twin sister, Dahj, but their agents aboard a captured Borg Cube have successfully uncovered directions to a world full of other synthetic lifeforms similar to Soji.
Beyond uncovering the Romulan conspiracy,"Broken Pieces" also offers an opportunity for Picard and Soji to talk about her"father," Data.After the flashback to the Zhat Vash ritual,"Broken Pieces" returns to the unregistered speed freighter, the ship captained by traumatized former Starfleet officer Cristóbal Rios and chartered by Jean-Luc Picard to rescue Soji.
Raffi starts the explanation, from hints she pieced together with the help of the ship's various holographic subsystems:"This warning says: don't do what we did. We created synthetic life forms and—""Apparently, these people believed there was a threshold of synthetic evolution—a dividing line," Picard says."The Romulans, it seemed, took this Admonition very seriously. They created a group, the Zhat Vash, dedicated to finding and terminating all synthetic life.
