Paramount+ announces that their flagship Star Trek series Star Trek: Discovery will be ending with its upcoming season 5, due to premiere in 2023.
Star Trek: Discovery's next season will be its last. The show, which was created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, premiered in 2017 and has since run for four seasons following the exploits of Michael Burnham , who rose from being a disgraced scientist to becoming the Captain of her very own ship.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Per Deadline, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is now set to be the end of the series. The season will premiere on Paramount+ in early 2024. Because of the gap between this announcement and the season's premiere, Paramount+ is set to celebrate the legacy of the series throughout the next year at various events.
However, even the shows that aren't spin-offs owe Star Trek: Discovery their existence. Along with the spinoff series The Good Fight, Star Trek: Discovery kept the nascent streaming service afloat, allowing them to rebrand and grow, eventually creating an entire cottage industry of Star Trek series, both live-action and animated. This roster now includes the Next Generation sequel series Star Trek: Picard and the animated shows Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy.
Star Trek: Discovery was also a beacon for Star Trek series to push representation and diversity even further in their casting while still holding true to the beloved characters of the past. Across the board, iconic characters from throughout the ages have either made appearances via actors reprising their roles or fresh performers breathing new life into the characters.
