Starfleet is based on mutual understanding and galactic exploration, so why are they fighting wars? Star Trek: Lower Decks calls out this paradox.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Star Trek: Lower Decks' Lieutenant junior grade Beckett Mariner has some strong opinions about the wars fought by Starfleet, and how they betray the institution's true purpose. Lower Decks season 4, episode 9, "The Inner Fight" reveals more about Mariner's backstory, including her friendship with Star Trek: The Next Generation's Ensign Sito Jaxa , and her service during the Dominion War.
Star Trek legend Majel Barrett believed that the Dominion War was a departure from Gene Roddenberry's original vision. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine writer Ronald D. Moore agreed with Barrett, but reaffirmed his belief that it was the right story to tell. While Star Trek: Lower Decks calls out the fact that Starfleet engages in warfare, DS9 made it clear that - unfortunately - conflict is sometimes unavoidable.
It's understandable, then, that Mariner feels betrayed by being thrown into the Dominion War as a young Ensign. And yet, in the real world, careers in the military are often promoted as a path to self-improvement and a means to see the world. The prospect of war is always lurking in the background, despite how many advertisements and recruitment posters discuss a career in the Navy or the Army as a way to expand one's horizons.
Why Star Trek Became More About Wars Than Exploration Ultimately, conflict has more dramatic heft than harmony, which is why DS9 broke the boundaries of the Gene Roddenberry Box with their Dominion War arc. The critical success of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Dominion War is likely why the franchise began exploring more military oriented storytelling. Star Trek: Enterprise had the Temporal Cold War and the devastating Xindi War.
All of these stories of war in Star Trek are a perfect way to keep Gene Roddenberry's vision fresh and interesting. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Dominion War posed the question of what happens when a powerful galactic force doesn't have the same viewpoint as the peace-loving Federation. War is never taken lightly in the Star Trek universe, and nor should it be.
