SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Despite generally strong reviews, Star Trek Beyond underperformed at the box office, putting a prospective sequel into limbo. After years of uncertainty, it was announced earlier this year that Paramount was planning to release Star Trek 4, which would see Pine, Quinto, and many of the other original cast members returning.
“We were in touch with J.J. [Abrams] and we were trying to see if we were going to be able to shoot this past fall. I don’t think it was possible. I have my sort of ideas that maybe it was just schedules were very… we couldn’t manage two get a whole cast and a whole crew to sort of come together. But I think as well it probably has something else to do with the project. But I know that we’re all on the same page, that we would love nothing more than to be able to come back.
What Could Star Trek 4 Be About? Years before Shakman was announced as director, writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, who now serve as showrunners on Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, detailed their rejected pitch for Star Trek 4, which involved a team-up between Pine's Kirk and his on-screen father, Chris Hemsworth's George Kirk.
There are dozens of villains in the Star Trek universe that have yet to appear in any of Paramount's feature films, any number of which could work for Star Trek 4. Gary Mitchell, Armus, the Xindi, the Cardassians, and the Borg are all memorable villains in past iterations of Star Trek that could make for interesting additions to a prospective fourth film in the franchise.
