Is ACT-CIS Party-list Representative Erwin Tulfo the new spokesperson of the President?
When I posted this rhetorical question on my Facebook account, I received a barrage of text and private messages from friends and social media followers. They wanted to confirm whether the former Cabinet official had taken the role of presidential mouthpiece. Lest I be accused of spreading fake news, I immediately clarified that I raised the question to determine whether President Marcos has given the congressman the imprimatur to speak on the former’s behalf.
It was the second year in a row that VP Sara delivered her congratulatory speech in English and Mandarin. In 2022, she became the first top Philippine official to convey her greetings in China’s official language .
As education chief, Duterte has the right to boost bilateral partnerships, which will benefit the sector she serves. In the face of the worsening crisis in the West Philippine Sea, highlighted by the recent removal of the China-installed floating barrier around the disputed Ayungin Shoal by the Philippine Coast Guard, diplomacy is needed to de-escalate the bilateral tensions.
Now, I have no personal quarrel with the congressman. When I was presidential spokesman, he would interview me weekly. He was then a newscaster for PTV-4. The last time I talked to Erwin was during the President’s State of the Nation Address. We have always been cordial with each other. That said, I would like to find out whether the representative has the blessing of the Chief Executive to publicly discuss matters related to foreign affairs. I urge him to clarify this.
