Motorists in the Bay Area and Los Angeles could soon be ticketed for speeding violations without ever being stopped by a cop.

Bay Area motorists could soon be ticketed for speeding violations without ever being stopped by a cop. California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 645 into law on Friday night. The bill will allow some of the state’s largest cities — San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Glendale, Los Angeles and Long Beach — to test speed cameras during a five-year pilot program that cities can start implementing as soon as Jan. 1, 2024.

The news release also said that traffic deaths and serious injuries in California jumped nearly 16% between 2020 and 2021, and that 4,379 people in the state died in traffic collisions in 2021; 1,275 of those people were pedestrians or cyclists. Walk San Francisco, a group that advocates for pedestrian safety in the city, previously told SFGATE that the bill can be seen as a solution to traffic fatalities.
