Rep. Jim Jordan was unable to get the necessary 217 votes on the floor of the House of Representatives to be elected House speaker on the first ballot, meaning another ballot will be necessary to vote on the lower chamber's first speaker.
The Ohio Republican said prior to the vote that he would do"whatever it takes to get a speaker," even if it meant multiple ballots on Tuesday. All Democrats voted for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries but did not reach a majority of the 432 votes on the floor.Jordan, who received 200 votes while Jeffries received 212 on the first ballot, can only lose three GOP votes on the House floor, due to an absence in the GOP conference, to be elected House speaker.
Jordan is the second nominee Republicans have named since McCarthy's ouster, as House Majority Leader Steve Scalise initially received the nomination from the conference but bowed out after it became evident he would not get to 217 GOP votes.
