It’s time to say goodbye to one of Houston’s beloved, old-school Mexican restaurants known for its expert enchiladas and slushy margaritas., 4720 Almeda, announced Wednesday that the restaurant, on the cusp of its 70th anniversary, will close on March 31. While Rogers has promised to continue the restaurant’s legacy at another location in a project yet to be announced, the news will undoubtedly sadden fans of the classic Tex-Mex spot.
Since it opened in 1953, the restaurant was owned for decades by the Medina family. In 2018 it was sold to new owners Abhi Sreerama and Ishita Chakravarty, who promised to keep the restaurant’s recipes intact even as they trimmed the menu. The new owners later announced the restaurant would close in July 2021, but“There’s absolutely no arguing the impact Spanish Village has had on Third Ward.
Rogers, who owns Bar 5015 and Faces of Houston, both on Almeda, as well as Prospect Park on Fountain View, stated he is committed to maintaining the legacy of the restaurant. In 2022 he announced his role in developing a neighboring 8,000-square-foot property, although it’s unclear if Spanish Village will be part of that project.
Spanish Village fans are a devoted lot, including Houston Chronicle restaurant critic Alison Cook . The restaurant is known for its classic cheese enchiladas with chile gravy, among other dishes. Spanish Village will remain open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. until the end of the business day on March 23.
