A new Spanish-language radio station geared toward immigrant workers has hit the airwaves in southwest Houston, offering a new resource to help educate and organize the thousands of migrant laborers across the city.
, named after the Spanish word for day laborer, was launched Saturday as a collaboration between the National Day Laborer Organizing Network and Crecen, a local immigrant resource center. The station’s online programming offers everything from education on workers’ and migrants’ rights to culture and sports shows.
The first Radio Jornalera station was founded in 2018 in California as a community station focused on the voices of migrant and low-income workers. It has since expanded to several locations across the United States and Latin America, including Minnesota, Washington, Guatemala and El Salvador. Ana Mac Naught, the coordination director of Houston in Action, a coalition of community engagement organizations that provided some funding for the station, said her organization was proud to chip in for the station’s opening.
“ is such a blessing,” said Zavala, who spoke at Saturday’s event as a representative of migrant workers. “You can call into some Latino radio stations and say you’re looking for work and they might help you, but to have a station specifically dedicated to the jornalero community is like a cherry on top.”
