Starbase-area residents are being warned of sonic booms as mega-rocket's booster stage attempts to land at Boca Chica Beach for first time.
BOCA CHICA BEACH — The countdown is on for SpaceX to launch the world’s biggest rocket early Sunday on its fifth flight from South Texas . The commercial space company said Saturday a 30-minute launch window opens at 7 a.m. for what would be the mega-rocket’s most ambitious test so far. For the first time, SpaceX is attempting to return the lower-stage Super Heavy booster to Starbase for a landing, a key step toward the company’s goal of full reusability.
SpaceX Starship set to take off Sunday from South Texas after winning surprise approval from FAA “Generally, the only impact to those in the surrounding area is the noise,” it said. “The sonic boom does not pose any risk of injury to those in the surrounding areas, including wildlife.” As in the fourth test flight in June, the upper-stage Starship is to continue around the globe to a splashdown in the Indian Ocean west of Australia.
SpaceX’s Starship launch damaged shorebird nests, environmental survey finds Though new licenses were required for each of the previous four launches, the license issued Saturday allows SpaceX to launch more than once unless it changes its flight plans. The FAA is still considering a request by SpaceX to conduct 25 launches per year from Starbase, up from the current five. Starship, the largest rocket ever built, has not yet carried any humans into space.
