As the pandemic upended travel, some airlines started to offer passengers something missing: flexibility. It started with the elimination of fees to change nonrefundable tickets. And last week, Southwest removed expiration dates on travel credits.

This is the second major pandemic move airlines have made permanent recently. Customers, carriers say, are more likely to buy tickets when more flexibility is offered.

It’s looking like a chaotic and expensive travel season.
