Residents of St. George and neighboring Washington City are concerned for the safety of their roads after three pedestrians, including two kids and a school cro
ssing guard, were hit by cars on the same day.
Regarding the Crimson Ridge Drive crash, police didn’t have further details other than the child left the scene in a personal vehicle and sustained minor injuries.“We also had a dog killed near that crosswalk, with a car barreling down the road,” LeMonds said. “It just breaks my heart to see and hear about a child getting hit just up the road at a crosswalk.”
Needles reminds drivers that “anytime anyone is in a laddered crosswalk or a school crosswalk, any time of the day, you cannot enter that crosswalk until those individuals are on the opposite side of the road.” “Everyone assumes that the cars are always at fault, when in reality kids have a responsibility and parents need to teach their kids to ensure they are doing things safely,” Needles said.“As a traffic unit, we try to focus on those mornings, lunchtimes, and afternoons when they get out, just due to the sheer number of cars that come into schools,” Needles said.“When we get complaints, we’ll go down and evaluate an intersection.
He said the rapid growth of St. George and Washington City may contribute to the traffic safety issues. “We’ve petitioned to have the radar trailer put here to try to remind people and give them feedback on their speed. They’ve put it up the road, but I’ve never seemed to be able to get it down here,” LeMonds said.
