Southern pine beetles are continuing to increase in Alabama causing threats to the timber industry.

Officials are seeking to determine the extent of an infestation of the southern pine beetle in states throughout the northeast. According to the Alabama Forestry Commission , nearly five thousand southern pine beetle spots have been located across the state.
Officials said the number of southern pine beetle spots has increased throughout the summer with the number of trees expected to increase, as well. Governor Kay Ivey said the timber industry in Alabama is a huge driver for the economy and the beetles pose a considerable threat. State Forester Rick Oates said this year has had the highest number of beetle spots in the state within the past 23 years.
“The agency has conducted aerial surveys in 51 counties so far, with more counties anticipated over the next couple weeks,” said Oates. “Both Mississippi and Georgia are also counting numerous spots. So, it looks as if this is an especially active pine beetle year not just here in Alabama, but across the Southeast.”Officials said the spots with the worst infestations are within and around Bankhead National Forest and the Oakmulgee District of the Talladega National Forest.
